The City of Cody is unique in that it owns and operates the electrical distribution system and is a member of the Wyoming Municipal Power Agency (WMPA), a cooperative effort of eight Wyoming municipal electric utilities (Cody, Powell, Ft. Laramie, Guernsey, Lingle, Lusk, Pine Bluffs, and Wheatland). WMPA owns a small percentage in the Laramie River Power Station located near Wheatland, Wyoming. This 1,650 million-watt electrical plant is one of the most efficient in the USA.

The City's distribution system includes over 1662 distribution transformers, 1625 power poles, 49.3 miles of overhead lines and 65.3 miles of underground lines. In addition, the City maintains nearly 1277 street lights within the City limits. The Electrical Division is constantly monitoring the system and seeking methods to provide optimum electrical service to Cody's residents and businesses. With a peak system of load of about 21 million-watts, the City maintains a reliability factor in its distribution system of 99.9864%.

The City of Cody also owns and operates two of three large electrical substations in the Cody city limits. The third is owned by the Western Area Power Administration.
